The DA-Bureau of Plant Industry-Plant Quarantine Services (BPI-PQS) successfully hosted the 3-Day Durian Export Development Training and Workshop on March 18-20, 2025, at Marina Tuna Lanang Branch in Davao City. The event was spearheaded by OIC-Regional Manager Flor de Hasmin C. Bayo (BPI-PQS Davao) and was conducted through Asec. Philip Young initiative of the Export Development Office in coordination with BPI Director Dr. Gerald Glenn F. Panganiban, BPI-NPQSD Chief Joan-May R. Tolentino, and the Durian Exporters Association of the Philippines (DEAP).

The event featured a series of insightful sessions aimed at enhancing the quality and competitiveness of Philippine durian in the global market. Ms. Melanie Provido emphasized the importance of adhering to the Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standard (BAFS) and ASEAN export standards to ensure top-quality durian exports. Mr. Cyril Montiel introduced advanced farming techniques, including integrated pest management and disease control, to boost yield and fruit quality. Mr. Nestor C. Villarin (BPI-PQS Davao) highlighted the significance of maintaining pest- and disease-free durian crops to meet international phytosanitary standards.

The workshop also covered export protocols and regulations, stressing compliance with trade agreements for seamless international transactions. Mr. Evervan Orboc (BPI-PPSSD) led the session on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), focusing on responsible chemical waste disposal, farm sanitation, and meticulous record-keeping.

The Food Development Center emphasized the critical role of personal hygiene, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and sanitary protocols in preventing contamination during packing and processing. Lastly, participants received specialized training on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), equipping them with the skills to implement effective food safety and quality control systems. These comprehensive sessions provided stakeholders with the knowledge and tools necessary to elevate the Philippine durian industry and strengthen its global market presence.
The workshop fostered collaboration among industry stakeholders, promoting knowledge exchange and innovative strategies to drive the Philippine durian industry’s growth and global competitiveness. This initiative is a significant step toward boosting agricultural exports, creating livelihoods, and strengthening the country’s position in the international durian market.
