The Bureau of Plant Industry-Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD), in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office II, the Regional Crop Protection Center, and Local Government Units (LGUs), undertook a vital on-the-ground monitoring and validation activity in Nueva Vizcaya from March 3-7, 2025. This collaborative initiative aimed to address pest and disease challenges faced by onion farmers in the region, with the goal of mitigating crop damage and improving the resilience of local agriculture.
The team monitored key pests like Spodoptera exigua and Spodoptera litura using pheromone traps, identifying more damaging pests like leaf miners and thrips. The team also conducted field visits to detect diseases affecting onion crops, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to pest and disease management. Practical pest management solutions were provided, including biopesticides, fungicides, and pheromone lures.
Overall, this initiative exemplifies effective collaboration and knowledge-sharing between government agencies, local authorities, and the farming community. It is an important step toward improving the sustainability and profitability of onion farming in Nueva Vizcaya, ensuring that farmers are better equipped to face the challenges posed by pests and diseases.
