Urban Farming Seminar

The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI), through its Crop Research and Production Support Division (CRPSD) and the DA-National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program (DA-NUPAP), in collaboration with the Strike Foundation Incorporated led by SFI President, Ms. Kristine Y. Evangelista, MPM., and the City of Bacoor, led by Mayor Strike Revilla, conducted an Urban Farming Seminar at Bacoor City Hall on January 31, 2025.
With the theme “Ganda ng Kapaligiran, Ginhawa ng Tahanan,” the seminar aimed to promote urban agriculture in the city by equipping barangay leaders and residents with the knowledge and skills necessary for cultivating edible plants.
Mayor Revilla expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Department of Agriculture, Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., and the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) for their invaluable support of the city’s initiative to boost food production. He encouraged participants to maximize small spaces for vegetable planting and expressed his enthusiasm for seeing which barangay would emerge as the top producer.
Mr. Ernie Lito “Tholits” Bollosa talked about sustainable urban farming. He highlighted the importance of urban gardening and using indigenous vegetables. He covered key topics like how to start an urban garden, choose the right plants and containers, and understand soil composition. He also explained the seed germination process and shared tips for managing a garden effectively. Additionally, he highlighted using recycled planting pots as an alternative solution to using commercially available planting pots.
The DA-BPI and NUPAP also distributed assorted vegetable seedlings, herbs, spices, assorted vegetable seeds, and IEC materials which were excitedly received by participants and City Hall employees who visited the booth.
Future seminars are already planned to keep the momentum going and further engage residents in Bacoor in urban agriculture.
