DA-NUPAP Conference 2024: Sustainable Strategies for Crop Pest Management

October 22, 2024 | The Department of Agriculture- National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program (DA-NUPAP) in partnership with the Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) through the Crop Pest Management Division (CPMD) kicked off the week-long DA-NUPAP Conference 2024: Sustainable Strategies for Crop Pest Management” at Manila Prince Hotel, Manila.

The conference brings together 200 participants comprising Urban and Peri-Urban Growers/Planters, Farmer Cooperatives and Association, Local Government Units (LGUs), State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), staff of Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Offices (DA-RFOs), Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI), and National Urban and Peri-Urban Program (DA-NUPAP) and other stakeholders to provide alternative sustainable strategies applicable for urban and peri-urban agriculture. Specifically, the conference aims to identify major insect pests and diseases for urban and peri-urban crops and manage them through the IPM approach, and promote gender-inclusive, equitable, and sustainable practices in crop pest management.

DA Assistant Secretary for Logistics, Daniel Alfonso N. Atayde, representing Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr., stressed the critical impact of crop pests on food security, farmers’ livelihoods, and the economy, underscoring the urgency for national action. He reaffirmed the DA’s commitment to adopting innovative, science-based solutions that balance environmental sustainability with agricultural productivity.

In his message, BPI Director Gerald Glenn F. Panganiban, PhD, warmly welcomed all participants and highlighted the significance of the conference in bringing together experts and practitioners to tackle the crucial issue of pest and plant disease management in agriculture. He underscored the progress of the DA-NUPAP, emphasizing that urban agriculture is not just about growing food, but about rethinking food production and access in densely populated areas. He also stressed the importance of PhilGAP certification in ensuring that agricultural products meet the highest safety standards.

The DA-NUPAP Conference, running from October 21 to 25, features expert speakers discussing various topics related to plant pest management.
