The DA-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) in collaboration with the Philippines Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), the DA-Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI), and the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office (DA-RFO) conducted the 5th batch of Basic Training Course on Inbred Rice Seed Production and Certification last July 8-12, 2024, at Four Queens resort, Pagadian City, Zamboanga Peninsula.

The training aims to capacitate the aspiring seed growers, recognizing their crucial role as partners of the Government in producing high quality inbred rice seeds. Their contribution is vital in meeting the increasing demand for high-quality rice seeds that help ensure a reliable rice supply in the country.

This initiative also aligns with DA Secretary Francisco “Kiko” Tiu Laurel Jr.’s vision of achieving food security in the country by conducting capacity building and improving the quality and distribution of seeds, which would enhance agricultural output and sustainability in our country.

A total of 25 aspiring seed gowers, 10 from Zamboanga Del Sur, 3 from Zamboanga City, 9 from Zamboanga Del Norte, 2 from Basilan, and 1 from Zamboanga Sibugay participated in the 5-day training.

During the opening program, Ms. Janifer G. Testa, and Ms. Mary Fe T. Sancha from the BPI-National Seed Quality Control Services Division (BPI-NSQCS) Region IX thanked the participants for their time and effort in attending the activity.

Mr. Jose J. Agad, Agriculture Program Coordinating Officer in Zamboanga Del Sur, also graced the event. In his message, Mr. Agad thanked the attached agencies for making this kind of activity possible.

The training consists of a classroom discussion on Palay Check presented by Mr. Isagani Boholano from PhilRice. A field practicum, facilitated by experts from BPI-NSQCS Region IX, was also conducted in Raynaldo Secoya Farm, Brgy. San Jose, Mahayag, where participants experienced field roughing.
