In a collaborative effort to identify and classify a plant from the Citrus genus, the Sibul Technology Business Incubator (TBI) tapped into the expertise of the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI). The initiative is part of a larger effort to assist the PSAU Sibul TBI with plant and varietal identification of a lime tree used by its incubate and a local entrepreneur, Mr. Jomar L. David, to produce fresh Dayap (the Filipino term for lime) and concentrated juice.
Leading the TBI team was Director Walter L. Pacunana, who heads the Office of Innovation and serves as the Sibul TBI Project Leader. The Bureau was represented by Mr. Rogelio G. Custodio, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) and Chief of the BPI Baguio Center, an expert in fruit-bearing trees, especially citrus plants.
During inspection on May 13 in Del Rosario, City of San Fernando, Pampanga, Mr. Custodio quickly identified it as Citrus aurantiifolia, more commonly known as Mexican lime. This identification is crucial for Mr. David’s business, which produces and markets fresh Dayap fresh and concentrated lime juice. With a focus on local agriculture, the collaboration between Sibul TBI and BPI aims to improve the quality of products and create opportunities for agricultural innovation.
As a follow-up to the successful identification, the team and the Bureau are planning a study tour and training on propagation techniques at the BPI Baguio Center. The goal is to help Mr. David and other interested incubatees under the TBI to establish nurseries to ensure a sustainable supply of quality citrus plants.
This partnership underscores the growing synergy between government agencies and local businesses in fostering agricultural advancements and supporting entrepreneurial ventures.
