The Department of Agriculture- Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI), through the BPI Crop Research and Production Support Division (BPI-CRPSD) in collaboration with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), conducted training on Urban Gardening to Persons Deprived of Liberty at Manila City Jail, Manila on March 13, 2025.
The activity aims to equip them with the skills to cultivate vegetables, preparing them for their upcoming reintegration into society. It will help them produce nutritious food for their daily needs and provide a sustainable source of livelihood once released. In the meantime, the knowledge they acquire will contribute to the correctional food supply and valuable recreational outlet for PDLs.
Mr. Ernie Lito “Tholits” Bollosa assisted by Mr. Ronald Luzon, discussed the importance of growing food in small spaces and highlighted the value of composting and recycling, encouraging sustainable practices.
To support their efforts, the BPI distributed vegetable seeds, seedlings, herbs, and spices.
