2nd Annual Assessment of Development on Innovation System for Climate-Smart Pest Management (CSPM) in Rice

The Bureau of Plant Industry-Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD), in collaboration with project partners from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), conducted the 2nd Annual Assessment of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) funded project entitled “Development of Innovation System for Climate-Smart Pest Management (CSPM) in Rice” in Manila from February 25 to 28, 2025.

The assessment was designed to evaluate the project’s performance after two years of implementation and to ensure its ongoing improvement and success. Specifically, it aimed to (a) present the progress of research activities; (b) to gather feedback from evaluators and key stakeholders on the project’s performance in meeting its objectives and deliverables; and (c) to define strategic directions, set priorities, and adjust work plans for the third year of the project.

The participants of the assessment were the chiefs and representatives of the Regional Crop Protection Centers (RCPCs), project evaluators, and representatives from DA-BAR. Dr. Lilia Portales from the Office of the Assistant Director for Research, Development, Production Support Services of BPI and Dr. Pompe Sta. Cruz from the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) served as project evaluators while Ms. Julie Ann Dulay and Ms. Perly Requiso represented the DA-BAR.

The assessment started with opening messages from Dr. Portales and Dr. Peter M. Magdaraog, BPI-CPMD Division Chief, which was then followed by an overview of the CSPM project by Dr. Nancy P. Castilla of IRRI. Staff from the respective project components (BPI-CPMD, IRRI, and PhilRice) then proceeded with presentations on their project-related activities. Each presentation was followed by an open forum wherein the participants and project staff discussed and inquired on each project activity. After the presentations, representatives from DA-BAR provided recommendations for the improvement of the project implementation. Director Gerald Glenn F. Panganiban, Ph.D., of the Bureau of Plant Industry, gave a closing remark afterwards. Lastly, Engr. Remigio C. Tabil, BPI-CPMD Assistant Division Chief, formally adjourned the event by providing a summary of the assessment.
