Dr. Herminigilda A. Gabertan, the BPI Assistant Director for Research, Development, and Production Support Services, presented the bureau’s ongoing projects and services aimed at promoting vegetable and fruit production in the country. AD Gabertan also outlined the National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program of the DA which aims to offer urban residents alternative livelihood opportunities while simultaneously increasing local food production to address supply challenges and help in the country’s goal for food security.
Dr. Gabertan also addressed the pressing challenges brought by climate change and food supply shortages, emphasizing the need for adaptive strategies in agriculture. She also emphasized that sustainable practices and community involvement are vital for ensuring a resilient food system and ensure safe and nutritious food for consumers.
As part of BPI advocacy in promoting food safety, random sampling of products was conducted through the BPI-Plant Product Safety Services Division (BPI-PPSSD) Mobile Laboratory. This initiative ensures that agricultural products at the expo are safe for consumption. The agricultural crop testing is one of the regular activities of the bureau, aligned with its mandate to guarantee the safety of food available at Kadiwa markets.
The BPI distributed free vegetable seeds and a variety of seedlings; informative materials designed to educate attendees about effective gardening practices. The initiative not only brought joy to visitors but also created a friendly interaction between BPI representatives and the public.
The DA-BPI’s participation in the KNP Expo 2024 reflects its commitment to empowering both Filipino farmers and consumers through agricultural research, development, and promotion, as well as providing affordable and safe products to consumers.
