The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) and the National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program (DA-NUPAP) have formally partnered with Quezon City University (QCU) by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and turnover of indoor onion growing rack on November 27, 2024, at the QCU Main Campus in Brgy. San Bartolome, Novaliches, Quezon City for the project, titled “Enhancement of Indoor Cultivation of White Onion for Urban and Peri-Urban Areas.”
The project aims to increase plant food production through an innovative indoor cultivation system that utilizes multilayered benches filled with soil media, integrated irrigation, and lighting solutions. The system also features a controlled fertilizer management scheme designed to optimize the production of high-quality bulbs and plant materials. This aligns with the vision of DA Secretary Francisco “Kiko” Tiu Laurel Jr. to modernize agriculture and increase food production in the country.
The MOU was signed by DA-BPI Director and Concurrent Program Director of the National-Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program (NUPAP) Gerald Glenn F. Panganiban, Ph.D., and President, QCU, Ms. Theresita V. Atienza, DEM.
