The Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI), through the Crop Research and Production Support Division (CRPSD), in collaboration with the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), and DA-Regional Field Office VI (DA-RFO VI), successfully conducted the “Capacity Building Activities of SeedNet Members Towards the Production of High-Quality Seeds of Adverse Environment Rice Varieties” on October 14-18 at the National Food Authority Building, Iloilo City.
The five-day training aimed to revitalize and strengthen the seed networks nationwide and increase the availability of higher classes of rice seeds for adverse ecosystems. Twenty-six (26) participants from DA-RFO 6, Siliman University, Aklan State University, Aklan Agricultural and Marketing Cooperative, Bohol Experiment Station, Soil and Water Research Development Station—Bohol and BPI—La Granja, and Guimaras National Crop Research, Development, and Production Support Centers attended the training.
Ms. Susan Brena, Supervising Science Research Specialist, and Mr. Marron Jay L. Manducdoc of PhilRice discussed rice morphological characteristics, cultural practices, warehouse management, and pest management. Mr. Sixto C. Cabila, Chief of NSQCS Region 6, and Ms. Queenie Carbaquel, Agriculturist I, presented seed quality policies, methods, and procedures. In addition to the discussion, a field practicum activity was also conducted.
