World Food Day 2024

October 16, 2024 | The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) joins in the celebration of World Food Day 2024 with the theme “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future – LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND”, at the Quezon City Memorial Circle.
This year’s theme actively champions the fundamental right to access adequate and nutritious food, calling on all sectors of society to unite in the effort to achieve food security.

In a video message, President Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening the agricultural sector which will help to improve the welfare of vulnerable individuals, particularly those who are most susceptible to hunger and malnutrition.
“I enjoin the entire nation, especially those belonging to the industries that are vital to producing and delivering foods across the country to use this year’s theme as a guidepost in continuing our endeavors. When we join hands to uphold our peoples’ right to food then we also provide them with a better life and a better future,” President Marcos said.

Keynote speaker Senator Cynthia Aguilar Villar, chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, acknowledged the farmer’s and fisherfolks tireless efforts in providing the nation’s food needs. Sen. Villar also shared the policies and measures she has sponsored in the Senate aimed at supporting the agriculture and fisheries sectors.

In a video message, DA Secretary Francisco “Kiko” Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the department’s dedication to attaining food safety and security, climate resilience, agricultural sustainability, and economic development, among other goals. Sec. Tiu Laurel also said that the DA will continue to support initiatives from various stakeholders, including the FAO, government agencies, institutions, and individuals, to ensure that everyone has access to food. He also reaffirmed the DA’s role as the primary agency responsible for agricultural development in the country, highlighting its dedication to promoting food security and sustainability for everyone.

DA officials led by Undersecretary Allan Umali also recognized the 2024 Nationwide World Food Day On-the-Spot Poster Making Contest National Winners.
In addition, DA officials took the opportunity to acknowledge the finalists of the 2024 DA Search for Outstanding Rural Women for their invaluable contribution to the country.

DA Assistant Secretary for Administration Atty. Allen Kristopher A. Anarna, CPA, led the ceremonial lighting of candles, which served as a symbolic gesture of hope and solidarity in the fight against food insecurity.
­
The event was spearheaded by the DA and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
