The Bureau of Plant Industry–Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD) successfully conducted the Information Caravan on Common Urban and Peri-Urban Crop Pest and Disease Management Practices on July 20 and 22, 2026, at the CPMD Conference Room. The two-day activity brought together participants to enhance their knowledge and skills in sustainable urban agriculture, food safety, and integrated crop health management.
The information caravan served as a venue for participants to gain science-based knowledge and practical technologies that support productive, resilient, and environmentally sustainable urban and peri-urban farming systems.
Technical experts from the Bureau of Plant Industry delivered lectures on Urban Gardening, Practices and Techniques in Hydroponics, Ensuring Food Safety in Urban Agriculture, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Strategies for Pests and Diseases of Vegetables, Common Arthropod Pests, Common Diseases and Disorders, and Biological Control Agents: Importance and Field Utilization. The resource speakers represented the Crop Research and Production Support Division (CRPSD), Agricultural Engineering Division (AED), Plant Product Safety Services Division (PPSSD), and the Crop Pest Management Division (CPMD).
The lectures emphasized practical approaches to urban crop production, including the adoption of food safety practices, prevention and management of vegetable pests and diseases through integrated pest management, and the utilization of biological control agents. Participants also learned sustainable farming techniques that contribute to improved crop productivity, the production of safe and high-quality food, reduced reliance on chemical pesticides, and enhanced environmental stewardship.
The information caravan forms part of BPI-CPMD’s continuing extension and capacity-building initiatives to equip farmers, agricultural extension workers, students, and other stakeholders with updated technologies and best management practices. Through initiatives such as this, the Bureau continues to strengthen its commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture, ensuring food safety, safeguarding crop health, and supporting food security in urban and peri-urban communities.
