Twenty-five (25) corn seed growers successfully finished a five-day training on Open Pollinated Variety (OPV) corn seed production and certification in Ilagan City, Isabela, from July 13 to 17, 2026.

The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI), through the Crop Research and Production Support Division (BPI-CRPSD), organized the training in collaboration with DA Regional Field Office II, through its Cagayan Valley Research Center (CVRC) and Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD). The training aims to equip growers with the knowledge of how to produce certified OPV corn seeds.

Resource speakers covered how to choose OPV varieties, apply cultural practices, manage pests, handle seeds after harvest, and carry out seed testing and certification. Participants also visited a cornfield at the CVRC research site as part of the training, where they practiced field inspection, rouging, and seed sampling.

Participants said the training helped them better understand OPV corn seed production. During the open forum, resource speakers addressed all concerns regarding production and seed certification. They also highlighted the growing demand for OPV corn seeds, reassuring farmers of a ready market and assistance in finding buyers.

Collaboration between government agencies to conduct training for new seed growers is expected to increase the country’s production of high-quality corn seeds.
