July 14, 2026 | The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI), through the BPI-Agricultural Engineering Division (BPI-AED) and the National Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture Program (NUPAP), successfully conducted a training for NUPAP Implementers and Beneficiaries on Climate-Smart Integrated Farming Systems for Urban Agriculture at the BPI, Malate, Manila.

The training included live demonstrations and lectures designed to help participants build their skills and knowledge in urban farming. Topics included:

­

• Introduction to Climate-Smart Integrated Farming Systems

• NUPAP Forms, Reporting Requirements, and the use of KOBOL Tool for Data Collection and Monitoring by Mr. Mark Kenneth Sierra and Ms. Flor-Ann Tagalog from (DA-NUPAP)

• Climate-Smart Urban Gardening Technology and Grafting by Mr. Clyde Mark Domingo from the Crop Research and Production Support Division (BPI-CRPSD)

• Proper Maintenance of Urban Agriculture Structures by Mr. Bryan Ritual from the BPI AED

• Integrated Pest Management for Urban Agriculture by Melvin Banagbanag from the Crop Pest Management Division (BPI-CPMD)

• PhilGAP Certification by Mr. Jhan Paul D. Golim & Food Safety in Urban Agriculture by Ms. Rozette R. Viloria from the PPSSD, both from the Plant Product Safety Services Division (BPI-PPSSD)

BPI Director Gerald Glenn F. Panganiban welcomed everyone and highlighted the importance of Local Government Units (LGUs), barangays, educators, the uniformed services, and private-sector partners in supporting local food production.

“Kami po sa BPI ay willing magbigay sa inyo ng mga seeds, ng mga kaalaman, mga bagong technology, at kung ano man po ang ating mapagtutulungan.,” Director Glenn said. He explained that urban farming can help communities lessen the effects of supply chain problems, such as rising fuel costs, quarantine restrictions, and inflation. “We believe that the food production system must start at the smallest administrative level, which is the barangay,” Director Glenn added. “Nandito po ang BPI para tumulong sa inyo. Hindi po namin maibibigay ang lahat, pero with your help and with the help of our partners, ay hopefully mas mapalakas natin itong ating local food production.

The training aimed to help NUPAP implementers and beneficiaries build their technical and practical skills so they can use climate-smart, sustainable, and technology-based urban agriculture methods.
