The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) continues to strengthen market opportunities for Filipino mango growers as 100 kilograms of fresh Guimaras mangoes were successfully exported to Hong Kong in support of the “Guimaras Mango Test Market Shipment Logistics Feasibility Assessment.”

The shipment, sourced from PhilGAP-certified Kokomojo Mango Farm in Sibunag, Guimaras, is timed to coincide with the 127th Philippine Independence Day in Hong Kong, where fruits will be showcased to diplomats, business leaders, and distinguished guests. The initiative is a key step in evaluating the logistics and market potential of Guimaras mangoes in one of Asia’s most promising premium fruit markets.

The successful export reflects BPI’s continuing commitment to safeguarding plant health while facilitating the entry of Philippine agricultural products into international markets. Through proactive biosecurity measures, quality assurance systems, and regulatory support, the BPI helps ensure that locally grown produce meets the stringent requirements of importing countries.

To guarantee compliance with international phytosanitary standards, a comprehensive inspection was conducted to verify that the mangoes were free from regulated pests and diseases. The inspection was personally led and monitored by key officials of the Bureau, namely Ms. Arlene Pernia, Regional Manager of the BPI–Plant Quarantine Service Iloilo; Mr. Sixto Cabila, Center Chief of the BPI–National Seed Quality Control Services (NSQCS) Iloilo; and Mr. Yondre J. Yonder, Center Chief of the BPI–Guimaras National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center (NCRDPSC).

The export was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the BPI–Plant Quarantine Service Iloilo, BPI–Guimaras NCRDPSC, BPI–NSQCS Iloilo, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and Kokomojo Mango Farm.

Beyond facilitating export documentation and phytosanitary certification, BPI provided technical and regulatory support to ensure that the shipment complied with the plant health and quality standards required for international trade. These measures are crucial in maintaining the reputation of Philippine mangoes and building confidence among foreign buyers and consumers.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco “Kiko” Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized the importance of expanding export opportunities for Filipino farmers and agribusinesses.

“Every new export market we open creates opportunities not only for our farmers but also for workers involved in processing, logistics, packaging, and distribution. Expanding market access allows our producers to secure better prices, increase incomes, and invest in improving productivity, helping drive inclusive growth in rural communities,” Secretary Tiu Laurel said.

For Guimaras mango growers, the Hong Kong shipment represents more than just an export consignment—it is another significant step toward expanding market access and increasing the global visibility of one of the Philippines’ most iconic fruits. As demand for premium-quality tropical fruits continues to grow, initiatives such as this demonstrate the value of strong collaboration among government agencies, farmers, and industry stakeholders in bringing the world-class sweetness of Guimaras mangoes to international consumers.
