Twenty-one new corn seed growers completed the Basic Training Course on Open Pollinated Variety (OPV) Corn Seed Production and Certification on June 9-13, 2025, held in Bohol. The training was conducted to help aspiring corn seed growers gain the knowledge and skills needed to produce certified OPV corn seeds. Messages from BPI Director Gerald Glenn F. Panganiban, Ph.D. and Assistant Director Herminigilda A. Gabertan, Ph.D., reminded participants that they are part of something bigger. They are future contributors to a healthier, stronger, and sustainable agriculture sector. This five-day activity was organized by the Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI), in collaboration with the Institute of Plant Breeding – UPLB (IPB-UPLB), the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI), and the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office VII. Through engaging discussions and hands-on learning, they studied selecting the right OPV corn varieties and applying proper cultural practices, managing pests, handling seeds after harvest, and understanding the full process of seed testing and certification.
The fourth day brought participants to a cornfield in Carmen, Bohol, where they experienced field inspection, rouging, and seed sampling. This practical exposure allowed them to connect their learning with actual fieldwork. With continued support from government agencies and institutions, these new seed growers are now ready to lead in sustainable corn seed production.
